Creators And Curators

What we all want is to have places that make us feel good- may it be the energy in an office space, cozy and inviting living room space, or the calm in a bedroom. Spaces that resonate with us and how we want to feel in any given place that we spend any amount of time in. Or spaces that open our view to the world around us and make us see things in a whole new challenging way…like when we are walking in an unfamiliar vibrant neighbourhood in a city. Our environment is a big part of how we are feeling at any moment, and it makes sense that we use them to our advantage.

But how?

Art is definitely a big answer here. It’s a good thing that there are all sorts of artists in this world because well, we all respond to different kinds of art. Are you into Indian miniature paintings, or murals that speak the history of a neighbourhood? Or is it the First Nation art that is rich with their cultures and beliefs that rock your boat? Or abstract art, or landscape, or portraits, or graffiti art…there is no dearth of the kinds of art, or much restriction in getting in touch with all sorts of art in our days of super connectivity. And this applies to both artists and collectors.

But.

We get to choose.

The artist gets to choose what kind of art they want to make- what is their dialogue, their way of speaking to the world?

The collector gets to filter from all the noise to pick what art and artist resonates with them and lights them up, and works best in the spaces they want to enhance with original art. Do they want to have a painting work in balance with their living room colours. Or does the curator want a corporate office lobby to feel more alive, and give the people around a respite from their work?

The city or the neighbourhood gets to choose what art most depicts their culture and values. And the energy they want to exude in their surroundings.

And when the chosen art pieces get installed in a space, it is a constant dialogue. Between the artist, who is expressing their world view through their art. And the people viewing it, who see that art piece through their lens. That constant dialogue, the energy behind it, and the feeling of wonder that art generates is what makes a space all of its own in a world where duplicity is the norm in everyday modern life.

This is when we need the creators and artists to come up with their creations that the curator then gets to decide what and how to place together for the most exciting impact that art has the ability to generate amongst its viewers.

Isn’t this curation out of created stuff that makes an art gallery or a museum an exciting place to visit? A good curation in these institutions makes their visitors come alive with ideas and a buzz for the amazing possibilities this world has to offer.

But good curation is a result of choices made from good creation. Choosing the best art for the mood and energy that fits one’s space and budget is a skill. We have professionals now that handle this work for their clients, because it is that important.

Using original art to curate an environment that can make one’s experience of coming alive in that space- that is hard to argue with, no?
